The Indian box office recorded its highest-grossing February since the pandemic, with cumulative collections for 2025 releases so far standing 39% higher than the same period last year, according to data from Ormax Media. The strong performance follows a robust start in January and is driven largely by the success of the Hindi film Chhaava, which accounted for 53% of February’s total earnings.
The film, which has grossed over Rs 650 crore, is now among the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time. The Telugu version of Chhaava was released in March and is not included in the February tally. Tamil-language Dragon was the only other film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark in February, surpassing the earnings of the big-budget Tamil release Vidaamuyarchi.
Re-releases continued to be a notable trend, with Sanam Teri Kasam and Interstellar ranking among the top 10 highest-grossing films of the month. The February list also includes four Telugu films, three each from Hindi and Tamil. The success of Chhaava has pushed Hindi cinema’s market share to 45% for January-February 2025, up from 40% in 2024. Ormax Media assigns language-wise box office collections based on individual releases, while all Hollywood earnings—regardless of dubbing—are categorised under a single ‘Hollywood’ segment.
The report uses Gross Box Office as a standardised measure, aggregating earnings across languages for multi-language releases. Collections for ongoing theatrical runs are based on estimates, with final figures subject to revision in subsequent reports.
