Amazon Prime Video will begin rolling out advertisements during its movies and TV shows in India starting June 17, 2025, the company announced in an email to subscribers. While the base price for Prime membership will remain unchanged, viewers will soon need to pay extra if they wish to enjoy an ad-free streaming experience.
The move aligns India with Amazon’s global markets like the US, UK, and Canada, where ad-supported viewing is already in effect. According to Amazon, this change is aimed at sustaining long-term investments in high-quality programming. “This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing the investment over a long period of time,” the company said in the communication.
Amazon has emphasised that the volume of advertisements will be limited and notably lower than what users encounter on traditional TV or other OTT platforms. For those who prefer uninterrupted viewing, Amazon will introduce an optional ad-free upgrade. Viewers can pay Rs 699 annually or Rs 129 monthly to remove ads from their Prime Video experience. These ad-free plans will be available for sign-up from June 17.
This change does not apply to users of Prime Lite, Amazon’s lower-tier plan priced at Rs 799 per year. Prime Lite restricts streaming to mobile devices at 720p resolution and already comes with ad support. Amazon clarified that there will be no changes to this offering.
Amazon’s current prime plans in India include a monthly subscription for Rs 299, a quarterly subscription for Rs 599 and an annual subscription for Rs 1499.
