Today marks the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the renowned Maratha king and founder of the Maratha empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Due to this occasion, there is confusion on whether the banks are operational today or now, with people seeking clarity on the same. Will banks remain closed today? In the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bank holiday calendar, the day is recognised under the ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’ category.

Due to the observance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti, all banking institutions in Maharashtra, both private and public, will remain shut on Wednesday. Since this is not a national holiday, banks in other states will remain operational as usual.

Also, even as banks in Maharashtra will be closed, online banking services will remain operational, and customers can access banking services via net banking, ATMs, mobile applications, and bank websites.

Earlier, the RBI had released the bank holiday schedule for the month of February. The month has a total of 14 bank holidays including public holidays, regional holidays, and regular closures on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays. February includes festivals like Saraswati Puja, Guru Ravi Das’s Birthday, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti and Mahashivratri.

RBI classifies bank holidays into three categories: Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday, Banks’ Closing of Accounts Holiday, and Holidays Under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
