Cyclone Michaung, which is expected to make landfall in Tamil Nadu on Monday night, has caused heavy rains and winds in the state, affecting flight operations at the Chennai airport. Several flights have been diverted, delayed, or cancelled due to the inclement weather conditions.

Chennai airport suspends arrivals and departures till 11 pm

The Chennai airport has suspended all flight arrivals and departures till 11 pm on Monday due to the adverse weather conditions caused by Cyclone Michaung. Earlier, the airport had suspended arrivals for two hours between 09:17 am and 11:30 am. The airport authorities have advised passengers to check with their respective airlines before travelling to the airport.

Airlines offer rescheduling and cancellation waivers to passengers

Several airlines, such as Akasa Air, IndiGo, and Vistara, have taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to inform their customers that flights to and from Chennai airport are likely to be impacted due to the movement of the cyclone. The airlines have also offered rescheduling and cancellation waivers to passengers who are unable to travel to and from Chennai between December 4 and 10.

Akasa Air said that passengers can rebook their flights for any date on or before December 17 without any additional costs. IndiGo advised passengers to check the status of their flights before leaving their homes for airports. Vistara also advised customers to keep more time in hand while travelling to the airport. Air India also announced that it is suspending flights to and from Chennai till 11 pm on Monday and offering a one-time waiver of rescheduling/cancellation charges on bookings.
