With speculation mounting over the site for Bengaluru’s second international airport, Karnataka Minister MB Patil clarified that no final decision had been made yet. Addressing the assembly this week, Patil indicated that the government is actively surveying potential locations and expects to provide more clarity within a week. The ongoing assessments aim to determine the most strategically suitable site for the new airport.
The Infrastructure Development Corporation Karnataka Ltd (IDeCK) is leading the efforts to survey potential sites for the new airport. “The survey findings will be submitted to the Airport Authority of India (AAI), which has the ultimate authority to finalise the location,” said Patil. He noted that factors such as connectivity, proximity to key areas, and environmental considerations will heavily influence the decision.
Potential Sites in Focus
Preliminary reports indicate that the government is actively evaluating Kunigal, a town along National Highway 75, as a potential site. Specific attention is being given to the area between Dabaspet and Kunigal. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara also confirmed that Tumkuru, including Kunigal, is under consideration. “The plan is to locate the new airport near Dabaspet, close to Tumkuru, though nothing is confirmed yet,” Parameshwara said.
Strategic Importance of Tumkuru
Tumkuru’s rapid transformation into a major industrial hub strengthens its candidacy for hosting the second airport. Spanning 20,000 acres, the region is home to over 150 industries, with further developments underway. Parameshwara highlighted key projects such as a Japanese township and the commencement of HAL’s helicopter production near Mettur. “If this location is chosen, considering all these developments, it would be highly beneficial,” he added.
The decision on Bengaluru’s second international airport is poised to have a significant impact on the city’s infrastructure and development. While Kunigal and Tumkuru emerge as strong contenders, the final verdict will hinge on a comprehensive analysis of the surveyed data. With the government aiming to announce a decision within a week, all eyes remain on the potential transformative project.
