Reliance Communications Ltd (RCom) on Thursday announced the acquisition of Anupam Global Soft (U) Ltd, a Uganda-based company.

Anupam Global holds a public infrastructure provider licence (PIPL) and public service provider licence (PSPL) issued by the Uganda Communications Commission.

Anupam Global had been allotted spectrum and planned to launch its mobile services by end of 2008. RCom is now planning to invest up to $500 million in the infrastructure for establishing a fully-IP enabled integrated telecom network in Uganda. The acquisition was made through a subsidiary of RCom.

Also, an investing Rs 6,000 crore will be made for laying down a submarine cable system, which will be undertaken by its arm Reliance FLAG. The company wants to build 1,15,000 kms fully-IP enabled optic network as a part of its plan for Africa.

Under the existing licences, RCom will provide mobile, fixed line, Internet, national and international long distance services, in addition to WiMax and Wifi services in Uganda.
