Paving the way for normal functioning of Parliament from Wednesday, the Opposition NDA and the Left on Tuesday relinquished their hardline positions to end a two-day deadlock over the Nandigram issue.

In a compromise that was brokered by NCP leader and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar to end the stalemate, the two sides agreed to hold a short duration discussion under Rule 193 on Nandigram. Opposition leader LK Advani, who had visited Nandigram earlier this month, is expected to move the notice for the debate on the issue.

While the Left conceded to allow mention of Nandigram in the text of the proposed motion, the BJP on the other hand dropped their demand for an adjournment motion on the subject.Sources privy to the parleys that took place in the leaders? meeting called by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Tuesday morning, said Pawar was able to convince both the NDA as well as Left leaders to show flexibility on the issue.

During meeting the BJP insisted that the debate be on the situation arising out of deployment of Central forces in Nandigram, but the Left favoured a debate around the larger SEZ issue. After some deliberation consensus could be arrived at with Dasmunshi saying, ?The stalemate created over discussion on Nandigram has been resolved nicely and with great harmony. The BJP is not moving an adjournment motion and there will be a short-duration discussion on the issue.?

The issue, with a Nandigram-specific text, will be taken up under Section 193 that does not involve voting, Dasmunshi added. He, however, refused to divulge the text of the discussion, contending it was the prerogative of the Speaker.

Earlier in the day Opposition NDA continued on second day to stall the proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament demanding immediate debate on Nandigram violence amidst sharp protest from the Left parties. Both the Houses were adjourned for the day following uproar over the issue with vociferous Opposition members storming the well.

The Speaker, disapproving NDA?s tactics of stalling the House, said, ?I am not getting any cooperation. … Day in and day out, this is happening. Even during the last session, half the time was lost in such disruptions. I strongly denounce this.? He said parties should sit together and decide in what form the discussion can be held.
