OBC quota in higher education is desirable, says Arjun Singh

Hoping that the SC, whose Constitution bench has started hearing on the quota law, will be convinced of the merit of the legislation passed in both the Houses of Parliament, Union HRD minister Arjun Singh on Friday reiterated that the reservation for OBC students was ?desirable?.

Hoping that the Supreme Court (SC), whose Constitution bench has started hearing on the quota law, will be convinced of the merit of the legislation passed in both the Houses of Parliament, Union HRD minister Arjun Singh on Friday reiterated that the reservation for OBC students was ?desirable?.

?We are trying to convince the Supreme Court that reservation for OBC students in higher education is very desirable,? he said.

The legislation, caught in legal hurdles, offers 27% reservation for OBC students in elite central educational institutions.

?This (OBC reservation) will make our democracy certainly more inclusive and meaningful,? he said inaugurating a two-day conference on Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policies here.

?The country?s economy, polity, society and governance will have to be more participatory and representative,? the minister added.
