Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik Monday said his party Biju Janata Dal will oppose the Centre?s move to disinvest Nalco shares.

?My party Biju Janata Dal is against the disinvestment of Nalco,? Patnaik said.

Meanwhile, various non-Congress political parties and trade union organisations have opposed the move too. The BJP Orissa president, Juel Oram, has said that his party would strongly oppose the disinvestment move. ?The Centre is planning to withdraw the equity from Nalco on the plea of expansion of the company,? he said.

The BJD Rajaya Sabha member , Pyari Mohan Mohapatra, said there is no reason why the Centre should put a profit-making company like Nalco on the block.

The leader of the opposition and senior Congress leader, Bhupinder Singh, has welcomed the proposal saying that it would help in financing the expansion programme of Nalco.

The Centre has made a fresh proposal to offload 10% more of its stake in the aluminium major. The ministry of mines and Nalco?s board of directors have to take a decision on it.

Earlier, the govt of India had divested 12.85% equity in the Nalco. With the disinvestment of 10% equity, the govt holding in Nalco will come down to 77.15%.
