The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and two of its largest enrolling registrars?Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and State Bank of India (SBI)?have chalked out the enrollment process for their respective customers for the next two-three years.
While LIC plans to enroll its customers into the UID system in a phased manner starting with West Bengal this year, SBI intends to do the enrollments starting with a pilot project next year. ?LIC has already started the enrollment process in West Bengal and it is trying to rope in its 21-crore customers in two or three phases. However, they have not appointed their system integrator and we are also yet to finalise the contract,? said a UIDAI official.
On June 8 this year, India?s largest life insurance firm, LIC, had signed a memorandum of understanding with the UIDAI to become a registrar for the delivery of the unique 12-digit unique identity number or Aadhaar to the people of India. With this, the UIDAI will also have access to a database of all the policyholders of LIC. LIC has details like name, gender, sex, father and mother name of policyholders. It only has to add the biometric details to it.
?LIC has also identified certain districts in eight states where it will be enrolling people,? the official added.
On the other hand, the country?s largest lender -SBI- is planning to start the enrollments on a pilot basis in more than 100 districts of the country.
As a registrar, SBI will collect both demographic and biometric information of the bank?s more than 170 million account holders. Also, because all the 13,000 branches of SBI can?t simultaneously enroll people, the bank plans to inform its account holders on the day they can get enrolled in the system.
To encourage its registrar partners, the UIDAI has decided to pay them Rs 50 per enrollment for signing up residents.
Besides, any person who is below the poverty line will be entitled to a payment of Rs 100 for registering for Aadhaar in order to compensate for his one day?s earnings lost and the cash incentive to every above the poverty line individual-who gets enrolled-will be Rs 50.
