Collect arrears

Apropos of the column ?Restore trust in the taxman? (FE, June 30), of course the new government should address the trust deficit between the taxpayers and the tax department. Indeed, a moderate tax regime will shun with untaxed income holders and seeking foreign countries to hide their black opulence. Quick trial of litigation and friendly approach of the tax officials augments taxpayers? involvement to come into a fair net of taxation. Further, instead of having tax litigation trials in the common courts, special fast-tracking tax courts could be created, which will bring quick verdict and make collection easy. As per data, currently, R4.66 lakh crore are to be collected as tax arrears, 97% collection of which is not feasible. Hence, the new government should expedite the collection of tax arrears without yielding political pressure.

Laudable step

The government moving in the matter of bringing back black money parked in Swiss banks must be welcomed and appreciated by all. Also, it may be recalled that some time ago LK Advani told that the BJP, if voted to power, would bring back black money running into thousands of crores of rupees. This has caused a huge setback to the Indian economy and the national exchequer. Furthermore, any legal complexity coming in the way of tackling black money must be dealt with properly. And for this purpose, the government should toughen the course of action. Lastly, the BJP government must think over all the possibilities with respect to bringing back black money and safeguarding the Indian economy.
