Of global interest

The ministry of external affairs was taken pleasantly by surprise by the overwhelming interest evinced by the heads of foreign missions in Delhi in attending the Prime Minister’s Independence Day speech delivered from the ramparts of the Red Fort yesterday. Usually, out of the 153 foreign missions in New Delhi, 50-60 approach the MEA for passes to attend the ceremony at Red Fort each year. However, this time, MEA received an unprecedented number of requests, from 150 missions. Given the paucity of space, only 144 of these could be accommodated. Given the enormous interest shown by foreign missions, for the very first time, arrangements were made for simultaneous English translation for the benefit of the foreign diplomats.
