Reform of the yuan’s exchange rate regime must remain gradual and controllable, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said on Tuesday.
Qin did not give a direct answer when asked whether President Hu Jintao would discuss the currency at this weekend’s Group of 20 summit in Toronto. But he noted that previous G20 summits had not singled out particular countries’ currencies for discussion. “The urgent task is for all sides to discuss how to enhance communication and cooperation,” he said, adding that countries should not engage in “mutual accusations and pressure”.
