Embarrassed over the disclosures made by the CBI on the atrocities done to farmers and their families in Nandigram, the CPI(M) on Thursday slammed the central investigating agency for ?selective leaking? of the report to the media. The party also said that it will approach the Centre against the ?leakage? of the CBI report on the March 14 firing by the West Bengal police at Nandigram.
??We may think of taking it up with the (Central) government,?? West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya told reporters here. Echoing him, senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury also slammed the CBI for the ?leakage.? ??It is a clear case of selective leakage. As the matter is sub judice, it is wrong to pre-empt anything,?? Yechury told reporters here. He also said that the latest developments in the two blocks will be discussed by the central committee, which started its three-day meeting here on Thursday.
The Politbureau member, however, did not say that any particular party is behind the ?selective leakage.? ??That?s for the media to interpret,?? he said. As many as 14 people were killed in the ?indiscriminate? firing at Nandigram on March 14. Later, the Calcutta High Court, in a suo motu direction, told the CBI to probe the entire incidents.
The primary report of the CBI, submitted to the HC, reportedly said that there was no enough provocation for the police to shoot at the protesting farmers on March 14.
Meanwhile, coming down heavily on the BJP for criticising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh?s 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities, the CPI(M) said that the BJP is ??going back to its basics.?? The party also said that the appointment of Opposition leader LK Advani as the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP is a strategy of the Sangh Parivar to ??rouse the communal passions.??
