Business houses keep up the growth trajectory in first half

Indias top 20 business houses have showed a significant growth in terms of sales & profit during April-September. At 34.6%, Essar Group registered the fastest growth in sales, followed by Ruchi (34.3%). In terms of profit, Essar logged a net growth of 132.2%, followed by the RP Goenka (101.3%) and UB (96.6%) groups. Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, with two new companies in current six months, showed highest growth in sales (254.5%) and net profit (302.9%).

However, the Mukesh Ambani Group and the Tata Group accounted for 19% or more of the total sales of the top 20 business houses.

In absolute terms, the total net profit of the 20 largest business houses has increased 26.4% to Rs 30,634 crore in April-September 2007, from Rs 24,239 crore in April-September 2006. More than 50% increase in net profit was witnessed by six houses - Anil Ambani, OP Jindal, Ruchi, Essar, RP Goenka and UB.

On the other hand, the total sales of the 20 houses also increased 17% to Rs 2,28,376 crore in April-September 2007, against Rs 1,95,220 crore in April-September 2006. While Mukesh Ambanis group topped the list with sales of Rs 61,598 crore in April-September 2007, the Jaiprakash Group came last with Rs 2,084 crore. Of the remaining houses, Tata, Aditya Birla Mgmt Corp, Jindal, Sterlite and Anil Ambani had sales exceeding Rs 10,000 crore each.

The ratio of PAT to sales of 20 business houses increased from 12.42 % in April-September 2006 to 13.41% in April-September 2007.
