At least 15 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men were killed and more than 12 others were seriously injured when Maoists ambushed them at village Daudhai, about 32 km from Narayanpur district headquarters, in the Naxalite-hit South Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.

Five bodies have been brought. There could be more casualties, said Vishwaranjan, director general of state police . State home minister Nankiram Kanwar said the team of security personnel was on its way towards the camp when the rebels ambushed them at Daudhai, just three km from the camp, leading to a fierce encounter. The injured CRPF personnel were being airlifted to the district hospital while security personnel were still trying to evacuate more injured personnel.

Meanwhile, police sources in Bastar said that initially a road opening party was attacked by the rebels, who later ambushed a team of more than 25 CRPF personnel. The incident took place around 3: 30 pm and the encounter continued till evening. Though additional reinforcements were being sent to the Jhadaghati area, the rescue operations would be slow as movement of security forces could be risky after sunset.

A report from Jagdalpur said a team of doctors have been kept on the ready at the district hospital at Jagdalpur to provide medical attention to the injured CRPF men being brought in. Senior CRPF officials said arrangements were also being made to shift the seriously injured to a hospital in the state capital.
