The Indian personal computer (PC) shipment market is experiencing a boom. A 20% year-on-year growth is recorded, with more than 6.5 million shipments in 2007, reports IDC India, a subsidiary of Cyber Media, as one of the key results of the ‘India Quarterly PC Tracker, 4Q 2007’.
Notebook PC shipments touched 1.8 million units in CY07 as against 0.98 million in CY 2006, a 81% growth as against Desktop PCs that saw a growth of just 7%. Of this, HP has been the major dominant player with a contribution of 37%, Lenovo with 16% and Acer with 10%. Though the market is now flooded with low end Laptops from brands like Asus Eee PC and HCL’s MiLeapX that have small screen sizes and are at a sub-Rs. 20,000 price point, the study indicates that they are not likely to increase PC penetration in India in a significant manner.
The report also reveals that Consumer Client PCs, Commercial Client PCs and Client PCs Total (desktops & notebooks) saw a growth of 23%, 19% and 20% respectively.
