The anger over Dipu Chandra Das hasn’t died down yet, and another case of a Hindu man being killed in Bangladesh has led to more backlash and uproar. Days after Dipu Chandra Das was beaten to death by a mob, and his body was set ablaze in front of a violent crow, another incident of Amrit Mondal’s killing has grabbed the attention worldwide. According to a Bangladesh’s Daily Star website, Mondal was killed on Wednesday in Rajbari town’s Pangsha upazila.
What happened to Amrit Mondal?
According to the report, Mondal was beaten up by locals when he, along with his group members, tried to extort money from a resident’s house. As the matter became serious, police were called and they rescued Mondal from the site in a critical condition.
He was declared dead at the hospital around 2 am, a PTI report said quoting Assistant Superintendent of Police (Pangsha Circle) Debrata Sarkar.
Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus “strongly condemned” the killing, but stressed that it was not a communal attack. The government said it “does not support any kind of illegal activities, mass beatings or violence,” the state-run BSS news agency reported.
In a statement, the government added that the incident was not a communal attack but one stemming from a violent situation arising from extortion and terrorist activities. It assured of legal action against everyone directly or indirectly involved in the incident.

Who was Amrit Mondal?
The Bangladesh government has stated that Amrit Mondal had formed a criminal gang and was involved in extortion and other criminal activities. Also known as Samrat, the deceased was accused in multiple criminal cases including murder and extortion cases. A TOI report mentioned that the government said arrest warrants were previously issued against him in those cases.
The report, citing several locals, stated that Amrit remained in hiding in India for a long time, and recently returned to Bangladesh. They said that he allegedly started demanding extortion money from Shahidul Islam, a resident of the village.
Police said he was making one such attempt when an angry crowd beat him up. It was not a communal attack, they said. Mondal’s body was sent to Rajbari Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, an official said. Other associates of Mondal allegedly fled after the incident, but the cops managed to arrest one man and recovered firearms from his possession.
The tragic death of Dipu Chandra Das
Amrit Mondal’s case comes a week after Hindu man, Dipu Das, was lynched and his body set on fire over blasphemy allegations in Mymensingh. Police and other law enforcement agencies have made 12 arrests in the case so far. However, the killing sparked widespread protests by factory workers, students and rights groups in Dhaka and elsewhere in Bangladesh, and India expressed its concerns as well.
The interim government has said it would take care of Das’ minor child, as well as his wife and parents. Bangladesh is seeing a fresh uprising after a key student leader of the July 2024 movement, Sharif Osman Hadi, succumbed to his injuries in Singapore. He was shot during an election campaign, and since then, the protests have been hitting minority communities.
