Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has accused the global political left of “double standards” while highlighting how global leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump, and Argentinian President Javier Milei, are shaping a global conservative movement. Speaking via video link at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Meloni claimed that the left is increasingly alarmed by the growing collaboration among conservative leaders worldwide.

Support for Trump and criticism of the Left

Meloni asserted that Trump’s electoral success has driven the Left “nervous”.

She compared the global conservative alliance to the liberal network established in the 1990s by Bill Clinton and Tony Blair, arguing that while the latter was praised, conservatives today are unfairly branded as a “threat to democracy.” According to Meloni, the left’s influence is waning as more people recognize their alleged hypocrisy.

“When Bill Clinton and Tony Blair created the global leftist liberal network in the 90s, they were called statesmen. Today, when Trump, Meloni, Millay or maybe Modi talk, they are called a threat to democracy,” she said. “This is the Left’s double standard, but we are used to it. And the good news is, people no longer believe in their lies”, Meloni added.

Emphasising the core principles of conservatism, Meloni reaffirmed her commitment to national security, border control, economic stability, and the protection of traditional values such as family, faith, and free speech. She stressed that Europe must prioritise security to maintain freedom, citing Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression as a key example.

The Italian PM noted that despite all the mud they thrown at them, citizens continued to keep voting for them. “We defend freedom. We love our nations. We want secure borders. We preserve businesses and citizens… We defend family and life. We fight against wokeism. We protect our sacred right to our faith and our free speech. And we stand for common sense. So ultimately, our struggle is hard, but the choice is simple.”

Praise for Trump’s leadership

Meloni expressed confidence in Trump’s leadership, stating that under his presidency, the world would not witness disasters like the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. She underscored the importance of border, energy, and national security, insisting that without security, “you are not free.”

Hailing Trump’s leadership qualities, Meloni said, “I know that with Donald Trump leading the United States, we will never again see the disaster we saw in Afghanistan four years ago. So, border security, border security, energy security, economic security, food security, defence and national security, for a simple reason. If you are not secure, you are not free. And when freedom is at risk, the only thing that you can do is to put it in the wiser hands.”

Meloni concluded her speech by urging conservatives to stand together against the decline of civilizations, promising to continue her fight for freedom and a stronger future. “I know that I am not alone in this battle,” she said, rallying support for a unified conservative front.
