With the New York mayoral election fast approaching on November 4, Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani has sharply criticised current Mayor Eric Adams for the rising cost of living and his political alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mamdani argued that under Adams’ leadership, life in New York City has become unaffordable, particularly for marginalised communities. He pointed to policies that have driven up the cost of housing, utilities, childcare, and basic living expenses.
In a speech at a local Gurudwara, Mamdani spoke directly to the financial struggles of city residents; he stated that many are struggling to afford rent, utilities, and essential services. He also spoke about the growing hardship faced by the Gurudwara community, noting the broader impact of these financial pressures.
“The current mayor of New York has made life unaffordable while getting closer to PM Modi and an Indian govt’s approach of violence against our community members,” says Zohran Mamdani at a gurudwara

In addition to criticising Adams’ policies, Mamdani also took issue with the mayor’s growing ties to Prime Minister Modi and the Indian government. He accused Adams of supporting policies that he believes promote violence against communities like his own.
“And this mayor has taken every opportunity to make life more expensive, all while supporting Prime Minister Modi and an Indian government approach to violence for our community members,” Mamdani added.
Mamdani’s statements against Modi
This is not the first time Zohran Mamdani has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier this month, during a Diwali outreach event, he took aim at Modi again, months after calling him a “war criminal”.
In his speech, Mamdani explained the difference between the pluralistic India he grew up in and the direction he believes Modi and the BJP are taking the country. “I have been critical of Mr Modi because the India I grew up in was pluralistic, where everyone belonged, no matter their religion,” Mamdani said. He also voiced concern over the BJP’s vision for India, adding, “My critique of Mr Modi and the BJP is that they envision an India that only has room for certain kinds of Indians. I believe pluralism should be celebrated and strived for.”
