Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday stressed that come what might, his government would not compromise with the  interests of farmers, cattle-rearers, small-scale industries and others. Addressing a rally in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the PM took a veiled jibe at the US saying that countries are doing “politics driven by economic interests”, but his government would not let them harm Indians. The remark comes two days before President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs deadline on Indian imports.

He said the pressure may increase in the coming days, but the government will bear it all. “For Modi, the interests of farmers, cattle rearers and small scale industries are paramount. Pressure on us may increase, but we will bear it all,” the PM stated.

The PM said he wanted to convey a message to all entrepreneurs, shopkeepers and farmers among others, that nothing will harm them. “Today, across the world, everyone is busy doing politics driven by economic interests,” the PM said.

“From this land of Ahmedabad, I want to tell my small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, farmers, cattle rearers and I am saying this on the land of Gandhiji- be it the small entrepreneurs, farmers, or cattle rearers of my country, I promise you again and again that your interests are Modi’s top priority. My government will always protect you and will never allow any harm to come your way…” he added.

PM Modi pitches for ‘Made in India’ products.

Once again, the Prime Minister made the pitch of “Made in India” products, asking people to use the “swadeshi” items only. The PM, who launched projects worth Rs 5,400 crore in Gujarat, appealed to go for local products this Diwali.

“This is the season of festivals. Now Navratri, Vijayadashami, Dhanteras, Diwali… all these festivals are coming. These are celebrations of our culture but they should also be celebrations of self-reliance. Therefore, I want to reiterate my request to you once again that we must adopt a mantra in our lives: whatever we buy will be ‘Made in India’, it will be indigenous,” he said.

“I appeal to the citizens of our country to prioritise purchasing goods that are Made in India. Whether it’s decorative items or gifts, let us choose products manufactured within our own nation. I also encourage businesses to refrain from selling items sourced from other countries. These small yet impactful steps can play a significant role in driving our nation’s progress and prosperity…” he added.

US’ 50% tariffs on India

The US under President Trump’s regime has been imposing high tariffs on imports from other countries. Trump called them reciprocal tariffs. He also previously called out India for high duties on US imports, adding that the US has not been able to enter certain sectors like farm products and dairy in India.

The two sides were engaged in weeks-long negotiation for an initial deal. However, New Delhi’s stance of not compromising on certain sectors, and Washington’s will to enter these areas became a point of tussle between the two sides.

Trump levied 25% tariffs on Indian goods first, then added a 25% penalty for buying Russian oil. He claimed that India buying oil from Russia is fuelling its war against Ukraine. Notably, Trump has been eyeing to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, to show himself as a right candidate for the Nobel peace prize.

The total tariff of 50% would come into effect from August 27.
