As Donald Trump got back to power, there were multiple challenges that Indians in the US had to face. On one hand, Indian immigrants continue to make huge contributions to the US economy, especially those on H-1B visas, but Trump’s tougher immigration policies have created challenges and fear among many Indian families.
His administration has launched large-scale deportations, including of some undocumented Indians, and proposed ending birthright citizenship.
A major setback has been the announcement of a $100,000 H-1B visa fee, which makes it much harder for US companies, especially smaller firms, to hire Indian tech talent.
Amid these concerns, a viral Reddit post has sparked a heated debate with one pressing question at its center. “This is not a ragebait question but a genuine question How do you feel now after how the MAGA White folks are treating indians ? From online dehumanisation of Indians to physical attacks on indians by white folks. Has your perception and support changed now?.”
‘They are backing for less taxes’
Netizens posted their comments on the post. A user noted, “I live in the US, and most Indians I know who back MAGA are just in it for tax purposes and because they believe it will help business because they are millionaires.”
Another claimed, “To begin with, the average Indian has no idea what MAGA is. They don’t know much about American politics.”
“There were literal puja mandals for Trump. “Yeah, the average Indian doesn’t know Trump, but the question isn’t directed to them,” stated a netizen.
“Indians who backed MAGA didn’t know about MAGA; they were just following a trend,” claimed another.
“Big misreading right there. MAGA doesn’t like foreigners. Don’t kid yourselves. None of them,” opined another.
“There was never much support for MAGA in India because most people didn’t even know about it. However, there was considerable support for Trump due to the perception that Modi supported him, given their partnership on certain issues during Trump’s first term,” added a netizen.
