A new video shows the moments leading up to the fatal police shooting of a machete-wielding Sikh man in downtown Los Angeles on July 13.

The incident began just after 9 a.m. at the intersection of Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard, near Crypto.com Arena. LAPD officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man in the middle of the street, waving a large blade at people.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Gurpreet Singh, had reportedly stopped his vehicle in the intersection, exited the car, and began swinging the machete at random. In video released by LAPD, Singh is seen engaging in what appears to be Gatka, a traditional Sikh martial art. At one point, he appears to cut his own tongue with the weapon.

Police initiated a brief pursuit. During the chase, Singh allegedly drove erratically and collided with a police vehicle. He eventually stopped near Figueroa and 12th Streets, where police say he exited the vehicle and charged at officers while holding the machete.

Officers repeatedly ordered Singh to drop the machete, but he did not comply. According to LAPD, Singh returned to his vehicle, retrieved a water bottle, and threw it at officers before fleeing the scene, still waving the machete out of his car window.

Officers opened fire, striking Singh. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

A two-foot-long machete was recovered at the scene. No officers or civilians were injured.

The officers involved were identified as Central Area Police Officer IIs Michael Orozco and Nestor Espinoza Bojorquez. The shooting remains under investigation.
