Harvard University on Friday asked students, staff, and faculty to shelter in place after a reported shooting on Sherman Street in Cambridge. The emergency alert which was later lifted, was issued via the university’s notification system, described the suspect as “an unidentified male on a bicycle [who] just shot at another person on Sherman Street. The suspect is on a bicycle heading toward Garden Street. Please avoid the area and shelter in place,” according to NBC Boston.
Search Underway for Suspect
Authorities from both Harvard and Cambridge police departments were actively searching for the suspect late Friday. Garden Street, which runs adjacent to Harvard Yard and the Cambridge Common, was identified as a potential route the individual may have taken toward Harvard Square. Residents and campus members were advised: “If you are inside a building, stay there.”
The alert specifically warned the public to avoid Harvard’s Quad and nearby streets. Ballistic evidence was later discovered near the Radcliffe Quad, confirming that shots had been fired in the area, reported MassLive.
No Victims Reported
So far, authorities have confirmed that no victims have been located. The shooting occurred near Sherman Street, close to Danehy Park and the Alewife T station at the end of the Red Line. Police continue to investigate the incident while canvassing the surrounding Cambridge neighborhoods for leads.
The situation remains ongoing, with Harvard University urging everyone on campus to remain indoors until the area is declared safe.
