A viral post by an Indian-American tech worker has sparked widespread debate about workplace culture and the management style of Indian-origin managers in global tech companies. The post bluntly criticises Indian managers, accusing them of creating a toxic and overbearing work environment, particularly in the tech industry, especially in companies such as Amazon. The poster tells us the differences between Indian and non-Indian managers, despite being of Indian ethnicity and having been born and raised in the United States. “Until it is demonstrated that you are working, Indian managers will always expect more from you. According to the post, “Until you prove otherwise, non-Indian managers assume you are working, and even then, they might not care.”

“Indian managers abandon their whole family”

The post explains and goes one step further and charges Indian managers with manipulative tactics. To make their team appear strong, they will claim you are performing well in public, but in private, they will criticise you to motivate you to put in more effort. Which is it?.” Perhaps the most damning statement in the post is that Indian managers are frequently willing to “abandon their whole family for their career,” claiming that they have “turned tech from 4-6 hour days playing ping pong into on-call, weekend work, and late-night calls.”

“Will never work under an Indian manager again”

Netizens poured their opinions on the post. A user stated, “Worked for a toxic Indian manager in a toxic Indian team. Will never work under an Indian manager again.” Another noted, “It is not just India-born managers, this also applies to all managers who did not grow up in the US. The American culture and society used to be generally very trusting of others. I was surprised to see a snack bar run on honor system when I was in grad school. Now that would be impossible. I bet the next generation of all-American managers will be very similar to today’s Indian managers.”

Another had a different opinion,” I have seen a lot of good and bad Indian managers. Stereotyping is not a good idea, and as I have had bad white manager and amazing Indian manager. They come in all flavors but I think when an Indian/Chinese manager is bad , they are dirty/toxic. Whereas the bad whites ones were mostly coasting ( bad for career ) and not at all toxic.” “I’m an Indian and I hate Indian managers. My manger has been with AWS for past 10 years he takes pride in saying that he barely gets time to talk to his wife,” stated a netizen.
