New South Wales Police said they were responding to a “developing incident” and urged the public to immediately avoid the Bondi Beach area. “Police are responding to a developing incident at Bondi Beach and are urging the public to AVOID the area,” police said in a statement on X.
Authorities later confirmed that two people were taken into police custody, adding that the operation was ongoing. “Please obey ALL police directions. Do not cross police lines,” police said, urging people nearby to take shelter until the situation was fully assessed.
Police said they received reports of multiple gunshots early on Sunday evening. Shortly before 8 pm, officers said the suspected active shooters had been “neutralised”.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service said it was called to the scene at around 6.45 pm following reports of multiple people being shot. It later confirmed that at least six people had been taken to nearby hospitals. Police said multiple people were injured, though the exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed.
Details of video
Video from the scene showed chaotic and distressing scenes, with people running from the beach and several victims lying on the ground receiving emergency medical treatment.
An event celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah was reportedly taking place at Bondi Beach at the time of the shooting. Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ), said the organisation’s director of media was injured in the incident.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing”, while New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said the reports and images emerging from Bondi were “deeply distressing”.
Police said more information would be released once details are confirmed and reiterated their request for the public to stay away from the area as investigations continue.
