US President Donald Trump, addressing American lawmakers in a joint session of Congress, declared that he is “working tirelessly” to end the Ukraine-Russia war and has received strong indications that Moscow shares the same goal.

On Tuesday, Trump read aloud a letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which he had received earlier in the day. In the letter, Zelenskyy expressed his willingness to work “under” the American President’s leadership to achieve peace.

During his nearly two-hour speech, Trump highlighted the accomplishments of his administration within its first two months. He spoke extensively on executive actions concerning immigration, the economy, trade, healthcare, education and law enforcement.

“I am also working tirelessly to end the savage conflict in Ukraine,” Trump stated. “Millions of Ukrainians and Russians have been needlessly killed or wounded in this horrific and brutal war, with no end in sight. The United States has sent hundreds of billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s defense. Meanwhile, Europe has, unfortunately, spent more money buying Russian oil and gas than it has on Ukraine’s defense—by far! And Biden has authorised more funding for this war than Europe has contributed.”

Trump then read Zelenskyy’s letter aloud.

“I received an important letter from President Zelenskyy of Ukraine,” he said. “In it, he writes that Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. He states, ‘Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians.’”

Continuing to read, Trump added, “He (Zelenskyy) wrote, ‘My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to secure a lasting peace. We deeply appreciate America’s support in maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is prepared to sign it at any time that is convenient for you.’ I appreciate him sending this letter.”

However, Trump did not indicate how he planned to respond to this outreach from Zelenskyy, who is seeking to mend relations following a tense Oval Office exchange with President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance last Friday.

“At the same time,” Trump continued, “we’ve had serious discussions with Russia and have received strong signals that they are ready for peace. Wouldn’t that be beautiful?”
