Disgraced musician Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs made his first court appearance in the highly publicised sex-trafficking trial this week — telling the judge that he was feeling slightly nervous. Jury selection is currently underway for the federal trial and opening statements by lawyers are expected next week. The former billionaire has pleased not guilty to the charges but his lawyers will face an uphill battle trying to undermine the credibility of accusers who say the hip-hop mogul forced them to participate in elaborate sex parties.

Three dozen potential jurors were questioned by Judge Arun Subramanian about their answers on a questionnaire meant to help determine if they could be fair and impartial at a trial that will feature violent and sexually explicit videos. The proceedings were paused briefly on Monday after the musician requested a bathroom break. The judge had initially suggested they wait and continue questioning jurors, calling himself a ‘machine’.

“I’m sorry, your honor, I’m a little nervous today,” Diddy said in response.

The 55-year-old spent most of Monday seated with his lawyers in court — wearing a sweater over a white collared shirt and gray slacks, which the judge had allowed rather than jail clothing. Combs been held in a grim federal lockup in Brooklyn since his arrest last September. His hair and goatee were almost fully gray because dye isn’t allowed in jail.
