In a tragic incident at a mountain resort in Gudauri, Georgia, 12 Indian nationals were found dead at a local restaurant. The Indian mission in Tbilisi confirmed the deaths, offering condolences to the bereaved families and promising assistance. According to the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the initial inspection revealed no signs of injury or violence, with carbon monoxide poisoning cited as the cause of death.

Who were the victims?

The victims, reportedly employees of the same Indian restaurant, were discovered in bedrooms on the second floor of the establishment. While the Indian mission confirmed that all the deceased were Indian nationals, a statement from Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs mentioned that 11 were foreigners, and one victim was a Georgian citizen. As per the information, all the individuals were from North India and worked at an Indian restaurant named ‘Haveli’ in Gudauri, Georgia.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Preliminary investigations suggest that the tragedy occurred after a power generator was placed in a closed indoor space near the bedrooms. The generator was turned on, likely after the facility’s power supply was disrupted on Friday night. The generator’s operation in the enclosed space resulted in the buildup of lethal carbon monoxide levels, leading to the deaths of the victims.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities in Georgia have launched an investigation under Article 116 of the Criminal Code, which deals with negligent manslaughter. Forensic examinations are being conducted to determine the precise cause of death, while forensic-criminalistics experts are working on the scene. Interviews with individuals connected to the case are ongoing to uncover further details.

Indian Mission Extends Support

The Indian Embassy in Georgia has assured that it is actively engaging with local authorities to gather more information and provide assistance to the victims’ families. In its statement, the mission expressed its deepest condolences and pledged full support to those affected by the tragedy.

This tragic event underscores the dangers of improper generator usage in enclosed spaces, emphasising the need for strict adherence to safety guidelines. Carbon monoxide, a colourless and odourless gas, can lead to fatalities in minutes if inhaled in high concentrations.

As investigations continue, more details about the circumstances leading to the incident are expected to emerge. The Indian community and local authorities in Georgia remain united in their efforts to address the aftermath of this heartbreaking tragedy.
