In a bizarre turn of events, a Pakistani boxer disappeared after stealing money from a teammate’s bag in Italy, the Pakistan Amateur Boxing Federation said on Tuesday (March 05).

The Pakistan boxer identified as Zohaib Rasheed had gone to participate in an Olympic qualifying tournament, which is taking place in Italy, news agency PTI reported.

“It is most embarrassing for the federation and country the way Zohaib Rasheed has behaved as he had gone there as part of a five-member squad to take part in an Olympic qualifying tournament,” the national federation’s secretary, Colonel Nasir Ahmed said.

A senior official of the Pakistan Amateur Boxing Federation reported the incident to the Pakistan Embassy in Italy and also filed a police report against Rasheed.

Boxer absconds after stealing foreign currency from hotel

Federation’s secretary Colonel Nasir informed that a female boxer Laura Ikram had gone out for training and Rasheed took her room keys from the front desk and stole her foreign currency from a purse before absconding from the hotel.

The police have been informed and they are now searching for him but he is not in contact with anyone, he added.

Notably, Rasheed clinched a bronze medal in last year’s Asian Boxing Championships and was dubbed as a rising talent in Pakistan.
