According to the announcement by the National Center for Seismology, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck Myanmar on Friday, March 27. The quake was at a depth of 10 km and was felt at 11:50 IST. There have been no reported causalities yet but tremors have also been felt in neighbouring regions like Bangkok.

The earthquake that struck the Myanmar-Thailand border has done massive damage to neighbouring areas like under-construction sites and other infrastructure. People have been seen running for evacuation and the panic-stricken city shared their experience of social media. The 7.7 magnitude Myanmar earthquake followed by a second earthquake of 7.0 magnitude has also hit Myanmar at the depth of 10 km at Lat: 21.41 Long: 95.43 as per the National Center for Seismology.

Over 40 workers have been reportedly trapped inside the building according to AFP. Residents in high-rise buildings have been recommended by the officials to stay outdoors to avoid falling debris causing damage to life. Officials and public service employees are trying to take the situation under control.

PM Modi has also shared his intend to support the panic stricken nation on his social media. He shares, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”

Aftermath of the Myanmar double-earthquake

The Thailand PM declared a state of emergency while the Stock Exchange also suspended all trading activities immediately after the earthquake. The tremors of the 7.2 earthquake were also felt in Dhaka, Imphal, Meghalaya and even Kolkata but no apparent damage was caused in these regions 50km east of Monywa. The 1,000 bed general hospital in Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, has been designated a “mass casualty area.”

Users on X have shared their experience of the tremors online. Causing damage to the city infrastructure, a user @huengburma shared an image of the Ava Bridge in Mandalay which collapsed into the Irrawaddy River.

Tremors in the Chiang Mai area have shook buildings, hotels and offices causing water from outdoor pools to overflow outwards and hanging frames to dangle. People have been rushed to evacuation and tremors were also felt across Laos, Bangkok, Thailand and India.
