The family of Indian student Sudiksha Konanki, who went missing while on vacation in the Dominican Republic, has requested authorities to declare her presumed dead, according to US media reports.

20-year-old Konanki, an Indian citizen and US permanent resident, was last seen on March 6 at the Riu Republica Resort in Punta Cana. Despite an extensive search, no trace of her has been found, prompting her family to formally acknowledge that they believe she is no longer alive.

Family’s Formal Request

The Dominican Republic National Police confirmed receiving a letter from Konanki’s family, asking for an official declaration of death, NBC News reported. The letter also stated that the family does not suspect foul play in her disappearance.

Her parents expressed trust in the ongoing investigation and acknowledged that they are prepared to comply with any required legal formalities.

Last Seen on Surveillance Footage

Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student, arrived in Punta Cana on March 3 with five female friends. On March 6, she was last seen on surveillance footage drinking at a hotel bar with her friends and two men, including Joshua Steven Riibe, a 22-year-old from Iowa.

At 4:15 AM, Konanki and her group were recorded entering the beach. However, an hour later, five women and one man were seen leaving—without Konanki.

Key Witness Under Investigation

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have confiscated Riibe’s passport, though he is not considered a suspect. The Dominican Republic Attorney General questioned him for over six hours, and further interrogations are expected.

Riibe, who has been under police surveillance since Konanki’s disappearance, stated in his fourth interview that they were hit by a wave while swimming, and Konanki struggled to stay afloat.

Despite ongoing speculation, authorities in both the US and the Dominican Republic maintain that this remains a missing persons case, not a criminal matter.

Unanswered Questions

While the search efforts continue, many questions remain. The Dominican Republic authorities have yet to confirm whether they will grant the family’s request for a death declaration. Meanwhile, Konanki’s disappearance has raised concerns about tourist safety and emergency response measures in the region.
