Law enforcement sources have identified Naveed Akram as a suspect in the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, which left at least 12 people dead on Sunday and sparked panic at one of the country’s most iconic and crowded public spaces.
Who is Naveed Akram?
According to ABC, one of the alleged shooters was Naveed Akram, a man from Sydney’s south-west of Pakistan origin, a senior law enforcement official said. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official confirmed that Akram’s home in the suburb of Bonnyrigg was raided by police on Sunday evening.
Police said one of those killed in the attack is believed to have been among the shooters, while the second alleged attacker has been taken to hospital and remains in critical condition.
What happened at Bondi Beach?
The rare mass shooting triggered chaotic scenes as crowds fled Bondi Beach, a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Authorities said investigations are ongoing as they work to piece together the sequence of events and determine the motive behind the attack.
An event celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah was reportedly taking place at Bondi Beach at the time of the shooting. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes as “shocking and distressing”, while New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said the reports and images coming from Bondi were “deeply distressing”.
Police said further information would be released once details are confirmed and reiterated their request for the public to stay away from the area as the investigation continues.
