A video reportedly from Texas, in which a man is alleging harassment at the hands of an Indian guy, has gone viral on social media and has divided the Internet. While some people think that “turning on the camera doesn’t make a person a victim,” others called out the Indian man’s “racist” behaviour.

What does the viral video show?

The video opens to show the man behind the camera asking the Indian man about his name. As the exchange goes on, the Indian man responds by asking the other person if he can see his ID. The man then suggests one of them should call the police, before asking if he could see his ID. The Indian man responds, “Yes.”

“Please take out your ID, and I’ll take out my ID,” the Indian man replies, before asking a woman to get his phone so that he can call the police.

“In my own neighbourhood where I live, I’m walking in my neighbourhood by my house, and I have this man asking me. Do I live here?” the man, who is making the video, says. He then threatens the Indian man with a civil lawsuit and asks the woman, who is with the Indian man, for her name.

The woman then repeatedly requests him to come along and get his phone, but he refuses, insisting that she get it for him.

The man then claims that he is keeping a distance, but the Indian man is walking up to him, as he pans his camera.

“I know that this is not your house. You don’t live in this neighbourhood,” alleges the Indian man.

“You don’t know what I live in, sir, you cannot tell me why I live, and I’m not gonna pull out my ID to show you why I live. I know you live right here. And I live in this neighbourhood. You have a blessed day, sir,” the man responds and begins to walk away.

However, the Indian man keeps following him, and at one point, he went as far as blocking his path, demanding that if he lives in the area, he should wait for the cops to come.

“This is a protected neighbourhood and you can’t be here,” the Indian man says towards the end of the video as the other man continues to walk away.

Internet divided over viral harassment video

While it is not clear from the video who is at fault, the Indian man’s behaviour has been receiving a lot of flak online. However, some believe that he is just trying to protect his neighbourhood.

In response to the viral video, one social media user said, “In America, sidewalk and driveway after the sidewalk are considered city/public easement, you paid for it, but the city has rights and you have no right to reasonable use by the public. If you see suspicious activity, call the cops. This is not a society where WhatsApp uncle can confront at will… This could have ended really badly. If one insists, just be a Karen and call the cops.”

“Why is he harassing some guy walking on the street? Is he the neighbourhood watch?” asked another.

A third said, “There is absolutely no crime here. It seems this guy is so racist against the person who is making the video.. He is not protecting, but rather just creating hatred against the citizens who live there.”

To this, one person replied and said, “Turning on the camera doesn’t make him a victim. No one knows the real story.” He, in a separate comment, said, “Black guy would’ve been acting suspicious, and the Tamil guy would’ve noticed something wrong with him. These are my assumptions, full story yet to be known.”

“He is too judgmental without proof, and he can take his racism back to where he came from. If there was suspicion, the right course of action is to call the police and not become a police officer himself,” yet another social media user said.
