A Reddit user recently shared an incident highlighting alleged workplace toxicity at an Indian company. The employee said he came down with a fever but had to continue working since his manager was on leave. When he informed his manager about his health condition, instead of showing empathy, she allegedly assigned him “more responsibilities”.
“Told my manager I had a fever, this was her reply,” read the title of the Reddit post shared on Reddit’s “Indian Workplace” community by the user who goes by “No_Brilliant_7338”.
Alongside, the employee shared a screenshot of his conversation with his manager.
‘Told my manager I had fever…’
“I am running on a very high fever, I am not taking any leave, but I would be taking a few breaks in between. No, today’s deliverables will be hampered,” he informed his manager per the screenshot.
Instead of a sympathetic response, the manager replied with instructions.
“Ok. Keep CJ informed,” she responded. The boss, whose initials are NG, continued, “And always ensure during break, Chirag or CJ is tracking mail. I am leaving for home. Either you check or Chirag track consumer mails for ~ 1 hour.”
The employee later elaborated in his Reddit post, “Was seriously running with some high fever during the second half of Friday. Since my lead was on leave, I wasn’t allowed any type of leave on that day.”
He added, “Expected a bit of courtesy and a ‘take care’ reply from my lady manager. Guess what, I didn’t get any of that, instead got more responsibilities in return, haha.”
Reddit came up with suggestions
The Reddit post, which was shared a few hours ago, has received over 600 upvotes and is still counting. Many even took to the comments section of the post to share their thoughts.
“You dug your own grave with your message. I don’t know if you were trying to impress her or something, but you should’ve said I am not feeling well and am currently unable to perform any tasks. I will take some rest and get back if health improves,” suggested one social media user.
The man responded to this, “I agree to this absolutely, mate. I should have been more assertive about this to her… would surely keep this in mind the next time though!”
Another added, “Inform and cut off. Don’t entertain these kinds of requests.”
“I was in a company, where when I told my manager that I had met with an accident and had a whiplash injury. All he said was OK. When I told him that, my dad died – his response? Guess what – OK. I left that company just because of him,” commented a third.
