Indigo Flights Cancellation Today Highlights: IndiGo, India’s largest airline, continued to cancel hundreds of flights on Saturday, marking the fifth straight day of chaos for travellers. With long waits and no clear solutions in sight, passenger frustration has only grown at airports. The airports said other airlines are operating as per their schedule, however, the prices soared to record high on Friday.
IndiGo on Friday issued a public apology after widespread disruption across its network, saying it is working urgently to restore normal operations. The airline has seen an unusually high number of cancellations – around 170 to 200 flights a day – causing confusion and long delays for travellers.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has ordered a high-level inquiry into the entire fiasco. Meanwhile, in the parliament, the issue continues to be major one with the opposition constantly asking for answers from the government.
As for the FDTL norms, the DGCA withdrew the same and relaxed other conditions for IndiGo to tackle the mess. On Thursday, IndiGo, which has more than 60% of India’s domestic market, told the regulator its operations would be fully restored by February 10. It cancelled 550 flights on Thursday, and has asked for relief from some provisions that limit pilot duty hours at night.
DGCA withdraws FDTL norm, what is it?
The Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) guidelines determine how long pilots can be on duty and how many hours they can fly. This includes number of night landings they may perform, and the minimum rest they must receive. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) revised these limits last year in January 2024 after reviewing fatigue reports and global standards.
It were implemented in two phases – lengthen weekly rest, extend the definition of night, and place stricter caps on night operations with the aim of reducing fatigue-related safety risks.
IndiGo issues apology
Amid the ruckus, IndiGo apologised after two days of widespread disruptions across its network. Issuing a “heartfelt apology” to customers and industry stakeholders, the airline said it “remains focussed on streamlining its operations at the earliest.”
“We extend a heartfelt apology to all our customers and industry stakeholders who have been impacted by these events. IndiGo teams are working diligently and making all efforts with the support of MOCA, DGCA, BCAS, AAI and airport operators to reduce the cascading impact of these delays and restore normalcy,” IndiGo said in a statement posted on X.
