A newly married tech professional’s personal account of being laid off just days after her wedding has gone viral on social media, drawing attention to the human impact of corporate job cuts.

Earlier, In a widely shared Instagram reel, Roshni Chellani, a techie with over a decade of experience, revealed that both she and her husband lost their jobs within 15 days of getting married, turning what should have been a celebratory phase of life into a period of uncertainty.

“May 2 is when I got married and experienced the biggest high of my life. On May 13, I returned to the US,” she shared, adding that she joined work only on May 17, and that too from home due to travel sickness.

A shocking message on her first day back

Roshni said her return to work was abruptly disrupted when she received a message from her manager soon after logging in, saying, “You’re impacted by workplace reductions.”

The news left her stunned. “I asked, ‘How much time do I have? Is it because of my performance? because I had a 4/5 in the last rating’,” she said, explaining that she turned off her camera as she tried to process the moment.

Her manager later clarified that the decision “wasn’t performance-based, but headcount-based”.

“He really tried to console me and make sure I was doing okay. I was cracking up so he asked me to take the rest of the day off. He even sent me resources after the call to make sure I am doing fine,” Roshni said.

Two layoffs, two very different experiences

Soon after, while her husband Shubham was trying to comfort her, he received a message from his own manager. “We both knew what it was,” she added.

Unlike Roshni’s experience, Shubham was asked to report to the office immediately, despite requesting an online call “because his wife was going through something”.

“His manager was like No, you have to come to the office. I need to deliver the news to you in person,” Roshni shared.

When Shubham reached the office, the interaction was brief and blunt. “His manager just put the brochure in front of him and said, ‘You are laid off’ and it was such a cold-hearted delivery.”

Reflecting on the contrast, Roshni said, “One manager broke the news but did not break the self-confidence or self-worth of the other person. The other manager deliberately broke the news in a way that breaks the self-worth of the other person and makes him question himself.”

Roshni concluded that she doesn’t realize that the world is nice only to dogs, women and children.
