A marketing professional working at a medium-sized family-owned company shared his resignation experience on Reddit, detailing how his management went into “panic mode” after he quit due to unreasonable work conditions and sudden changes in salary structure.
Pay Structure Change Triggers Resignation
The employee, who headed the marketing division, explained that his team was already working under pressure with limited budgets. Despite competitors outspending them, the marketing team continued to put in long hours, especially during festivals. “The so-called Directors of the company have no idea about how to measure anything in marketing. They don’t give us enough budgets despite our competition brands outspending us like crazy! Inspite of all this, me and my team work very hard 6 days a week,” he wrote.
However, tensions escalated when HR introduced a performance-linked pay system without prior consultation. “Without any discussion, they converted 40% of my salary into KPI-based achievement structure! And guess who decides the KPI on a monthly basis? HR and the Directors! Idiotic expectations like increase in Instagram followers by 5% every month! Increase in Stock At Hand by 5 points every quarter! 32 on-ground events every month!” the employee added.
Management Pleads After Employee Refuses to Stay
After receiving only 70% of his take-home salary at the beginning of October, the employee decided to resign immediately. “Just put down my papers the very next day,” he said. According to him, the management quickly panicked and pleaded with him to stay, even offering to reverse the salary changes. But the employee stood firm. “They promised to remove the changes in the salary structure, to which I said that my trust is completely broken now,” he noted.
He added that the company was struggling to find a replacement as its reputation had already been damaged. “They are now begging me to stay until they find a replacement. I’ve said that I’ll be completing my 2-month notice period and leaving, and it’s up to them to find a replacement by then,” he shared.
New Opportunity and a Sense of Vindication
The employee revealed that the National Sales Head had also quit for similar reasons, highlighting broader dissatisfaction within the company. In a positive turn, he recently received an offer for a Category Manager position at an FMCG company with a 20% salary hike. “Feels good man!” he concluded.
