Life abroad seems fascinating to many, with income in dollars, a place that is more developed from one’s own country, where people travel for vacation and much more. However, all these come at a price that many Non-Resident Indians (NRI) have to pay. A Reddit post has gone viral for all these reasons now, where a person shared all that the NRIs have to go through for the life they live abroad.

The post has been captioned “The NRI Life We Don’t Show on Instagram or in the Family WhatsApp Group”, by a user who goes by @Popular_Class7327.

Difficult to take care of parents from far away

The user shared how it is so difficult to take care of your parents who are growing older with no one by their side. The Redditor mentioned that a normal text about feeling unwell from parents leads to searching “urgent care Hyderabad” at 2 am.

The user added video calls are tough with mother, as it is a struggle for her to unmute. Surgeries that parents undertake often go untold or they tell only after getting it done so that their children, who are all grown, are not troubled, the NRI added.

Security, finances and ‘2 lives in one bank account’

The anonymous user also explained how tiring it is to maintain the finances from so far away, and especially telling parents to beware of all the scams. “Paying your parents’ electricity bill over a glitchy call while reminding them: Don’t share your OTP with anyone,” the post read.

The user talked about living “two lives in one bank account”, as there is a need to save funds for a brother’s wedding back home, and a requirement of saving for a child’s college education abroad.

“Every dollar already spoken for: mortgage, 529, retirement, healthcare, insurance,” the post further mentioned.

Redditors shared the post and also their stories of tough times managing everything from a land thousands of miles away from their home.
