Indians who go abroad, either to study or work, are often shocked by how expensive everything is on the shelves. Right from groceries like coriander leaves and chillies, which are often complimentary from vegetable vendors in India, to other common essentials. Now, a video of a man who returned to India from Germany has been going viral on social media.
‘Everything in India is cheaper’
In the video, his sister records him as he expresses his surprise at how much cheaper everyday products are in India compared to Germany.
“Average Germany Return,” read the caption of the post shared on Instagram.
“POV: when everything in India is cheaper than in the country. Bro just returned from Germany,” read the text inserted in the video.
What does the viral video show?
The Instagram video opens to show the man walking through a grocery store with his sister. His first surprise comes when he picks up a box of Tic Tac, which is priced at Rs 20 in India.
“So cheap,” he said, before adding that in Germany, he pays Rs 200 for the same candy.
He then grabs a 2.25-litre bottle of Coca-Cola and is amazed to find it priced at just Rs 95. “In Germany, we used to pay Rs 250 for a two-litre bottle,” he went on to say.
Next, he spots a bottle of Frooti for Rs 100, which he said is not available in Germany.
At the checkout, he is left stunned to see the total, just €12.5 (around Rs 1,273), and can’t believe how affordable groceries are in India compared to Germany.
How did social media users react to this?
While many flocked to the comments section of the video saying that they found it relatable, others pointed out the purchasing power parity.
One social media user said that they can totally relate to the man. “I can totally relate… Here in Korea, we have to pay 3x the amount for Indian groceries.”
“Concept of Purchasing Power Parity everyone should read about it,” suggested another.
“Living in a simulator,” quipped yet another Instagram user.
A fourth said, “Hahaha. Feel you, bro.”
