Veteran cricket administrator Rajeev Shukla is set to take charge as interim BCCI president after Roger Binny turns 70 next month, BCCI sources told PTI on Monday. Binny, who succeeded Sourav Ganguly in 2022, will cross the official age limit for BCCI office-bearers on July 19, making him ineligible to continue in the role.

According to BCCI rules, the senior-most vice-president steps in as interim president until fresh elections are held. Shukla, currently serving in that capacity, is expected to assume the role by mid-July, with a formal announcement likely closer to the date.

A former India all-rounder, Binny had a distinguished international career, taking 124 wickets and scoring 1,459 runs. He also served on the BCCI selection committee prior to becoming president.

Major milestones under Binny’s presidency

Binny’s tenure as BCCI president was marked by significant achievements. Under his leadership, the Indian men’s cricket team won two major ICC titles — the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

He also oversaw the launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), a major step in the development of women’s cricket in the country.

One of Binny’s most debated policy decisions was making it mandatory for centrally contracted players to participate in domestic cricket when not on national duty. This led to notable consequences — including the exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the BCCI’s central contract list last year for failing to comply with the directive.

A former all-rounder, Binny represented India in 27 Tests and 72 ODIs, taking 47 and 77 wickets respectively. He also scored 830 runs in Tests, including five fifties, and 629 runs in ODIs. He was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 1983 World Cup, claiming 18 wickets in the title-winning campaign.

Change in BCCI leadership

In another significant administrative change earlier this year, Devajit Saikia was appointed BCCI secretary, replacing Jay Shah, who went on to become the ICC chairman. Saikia was elected unopposed.
