Rishabh Pant, the captain of Delhi Capitals, has been suspended by the BCCI for one match in ongoing IPL 2024. The decision was announced on Saturday. The BCCI took the decision due to slower over-rate maintained by Pant. He has also been fined Rs 30 lakh apart from one match suspension.
The slower over rule has been mentioned as a violation under the IPL Code of Conduct. The BCCI said that Pant had violated this rule three times in this season of the IPL. It is for this reason that Pant has been suspended. The cricketing body says that the third offence took place in DC’s league match against Rajasthan Royals at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Not just Pant, but other members of the Playing XI of Delhi Capitals have also been fined. According to the BCCI, each player apart from skipper has been fined Rs 12 lakh or 50 per cent of match fee, whichever is lesser. Impact subs have also been penalised.
According to the IPL rules, while the first instance of over-rate breach invites a penalty of Rs 12 lakh, the second such instance attracts penalty of Rs 24 lakh. If a player is found violating the over-rate rule for third time, the BCCI rules say that he will be fined for Rs 30 lakh and suspension for one match as well.
As Delhi Capitals has lost the appeal, in the wake of Pant’s suspension, the team has appointed Axar Patel as stand-in skipper for the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The development was confirmed by DC’s Head Coach Ricky Ponting. With 12 points, DC is in the middle of the IPL Points Table and need to win each league match to have a shot at the playoff berth.
