With the new regulations dictating a 16-over contest per side, Mumbai Indians, having won the toss, opted to field first.
Kolkata Knight Riders endured a shaky start, losing both their openers and captain within the condensed powerplay of 5 overs. Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has won the toss and opted to bowl first in match 60 of Tata IPL 2024. After winning toss, Pandya said that he would like to see how the pitch behaves as it has been under sweats for long.
"This is pitch no.5, the last game played on it was on the 23rd March against SRH. 67m and 62m boundaries, 75m down the ground. The spinners might quite like it. It’s been under covers for so long so the spinners might get some purchase. If the pacers get it slightly wrong, it’ll disappear. It’s very cool here at Kolkata so it might swing around a bit" says Danny Morrison.
Revised playing conditions that we told you about minutes back have been officially announced. We will soon see Hardik Pandya and Shreyas Iyer for the toss at 9.
If all goes well and the conditions look conducive for the match, then the toss will take place at 9:00 pm and it will be a curtailed match of 16 overs. The game will begin at 9:15
Though the rains have stopped, and ground staff are preparing the pitch, update from Eden say that play may not happen anytime soon. Next inspection is at 8:45 pm. We can see Hardik Pandya checking the field.
Ground staff's tireless efforts have paid off and we can see the covers coming off at Eden. But Bret Lee just made a very critical observation. He said that there should be a better tech to clear the ground instead of people mopping and brooming! Well said, Lee! Reminds us of last season's finale at Narendra Modi Stadium.

An Indian Express report says that the covers are being removed. But the effect of downpour may not only curtail the match but we may also see the first washout of the season. No official update as of now. It's very windy in Kolkata. Players are hoping for a dryish outfield.
Though KKR are the favourites, anything can happen on the field. So Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians can win this match. In case they do conquer Eden, no team will be in position to officially qualify for the IPL playoffs. This also means that KKR will remain tied with RR in the rankings at 16 points.
It has been drizzling since 6 pm at Eden Gardens. Covers are on and the toss has been delayed.
Players have started coming out. The covers, however, are still in place. More rain is expected on Saturday, so chances of a curtailed game or even a washout can’t be ruled out.
An Indian Express report says that Hardik Pandya's leadership has been questioned again and again by 'senior' Mumbai Indians players. The report says that there was some conversation around Pandya's leadership style by players and coaching staff. However, MI official say that there is no crisis, and the dressing room is used to Rohit Sharma's way of work for past decade and players and staff are coming to the terms of the change that took place before the start of this season.
Remember how Mitch Starc was criticised for poor show in the league matches. But with the playoffs nearing, KKR's bowling unit is also sharpening its attack. We saw Starc's brilliant spell at Wankhede. Narine has been very economical overall. So along with batting, KKR is focusing on bowling as well to have a comprehensive winning strategy.
Kolkata Knight Riders breached the fortress of Wankhede after 12 years and the look to conquer their home ground today a well. There's a lot of buzz around their batting performance. Phil Salt and Sunil Narine have been magnificent in the powerplay. KKR have one of the best powerplay runrate in this season. The batters did a fabulous job at Ekana, which is the biggest IPL venue in terms of area.
In the head-to-head clashes between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI), spanning 33 matches, Mumbai Indians have emerged victorious 23 times, while Kolkata Knight Riders have secured wins in 10 matches.
When specifically considering their encounters at Eden Gardens, out of the 10 matches played, Mumbai Indians have triumphed in 7, whereas Kolkata Knight Riders have managed to win 3.
Delving into Kolkata Knight Riders' overall performance at Eden Gardens, they have participated in 87 matches, of which they have won 51, lost 36, and had one match end in a tie.
Rishabh Pant, the captain of Delhi Capitals, has been suspended by the BCCI for one match in ongoing IPL 2024. The decision was announced on Saturday. So far, no team has officially qualified for the playoffs. Hence, it will be important for Kolkata Knight Riders to win this match to move beyond the probabilities and get a clear picture for the next stage of the game. As far as MI is concerned, a win here may not mean anything as they are already out of the playoff race after SRH beat LSG at Uppal earlier this week.
Hello folks! It's weekend mania in IPL 2024 as table toppers Kolkata Knight Riders take on out-of-playoff race Mumbai Indians at majestic Eden Gardens at 7:30 pm tonight.
