Terrific bowling attack by Matheesha Pathirana and vintage MS Dhoni headlined Chennai Super Kings’ commanding 20-run win over Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Despite Rohit Sharma’s valiant unbeaten 105, it was Dhoni’s mind-blowing three consecutive sixes in the final over bowled by Hardik Pandya that propelled CSK to a massive 206/4.
Pathirana then unleashed havoc with his 4 for 28, slamming the brakes on MI’s chase at 186 for six. Rohit Sharma’s heroic century, only his second in the history IPL and first since 2012, with 11 boundaries and five sixes, wasn’t enough as wickets kept tumbling. The Wankhede Stadium pitch favored batsmen, yet CSK’s defending champions seized their first away victory this season, leaving Mumbai Indians reeling at the eighth spot in the IPL points table. This is MI’s fourth loss in six games. CSK, on the other hand, are now on third spot with 8 points.
In a game wherein the loudest cheers were reserved for Dhoni, Mumbai skipper Pandya continued to get booed intermittently.
