Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer and Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya were handed heavy fines for slow over-rate offences during Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The collective amount of the fine stands at Rs 54 lakh.
This marked PBKS’s second over-rate offence of the season, resulting in a fine of Rs 24 lakh for Iyer. Additionally, each member of the Playing XI and the Impact Player from the PBKS side were fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their individual match fees, whichever was lower.
For MI, this was the third such offence this season. As a result, Pandya incurred a fine of Rs 30 lakh, while the rest of the team’s Playing XI and Impact Player were penalised either Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their respective match fees, whichever was lesser.
The penalties come under the tournament’s Code of Conduct, which outlines strict guidelines around maintaining the minimum over-rate throughout the season. Repeat breaches attract escalated financial penalties in line with the regulations.
The high-pressure fixture which was delayed by over two hours due to rain, culminated in a dramatic win for Punjab Kings, who successfully chased down a stiff target of 203. Leading from the front, Iyer played a captain’s role, smashing 87 off only 41 balls, anchoring the innings with measured aggression.
Important contributions were also made by Nehal Wadhera (48 off 29 balls) and Josh Inglis (38 off 21 balls), whose innings kept the chase going and guaranteed momentum was maintained in the middle overs.
With this win PBKS advanced to the IPL 2025 final, where they are set to play with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on June 3. PBSK will seek to continue its winning streak as it chases its first-ever IPL championship title.
