South Africa defeated Sri Lanka by 102 runs on Saturday at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. In the ICC World Cup 2023, South Africa scored the highest-ever run – 428. During the chase, Sri Lanka was all-out on 326 (44.5). In total, 748 runs were scored which is a World Cup record.

To take South Africa to an astonishing 428/5 (in 50 overs), Aiden Makram, Quinton de Kock, and Rassie Van Der Dussen scored hundreds. Markram scored a century (in just 49 balls). It is the fastest in the history of the tournament.

In the starting, South Africa lost their skipper Temba Bavuma for just eight runs. They were 10/1 in 1.4 overs. However, Quinton de Kock and Rassie Van Der Dussen quickly rebuilt the innings. In 10 overs, South Africa were 48/1. In 17.3 overs, the 100-run mark came. With six fours and a six, Dussen reached his fifty in 51 balls. In 102 balls, the duo brought up their hundred-run partnership and with four boundaries and a six, de Kock reached his fifty in 61 balls.

In the innings, the 43rd over proved to be the most expensive. Pathirana smacked for 26 runs. With the help of a massive six from Miller, South Africa’s 400 came in 48.1 overs.

The Sri Lanka team was all out for 326 inside the 45th over. Interestingly, even after losing eight wickets, the Sri Lankan team reached 300 runs. Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka of Sri Lanka played in a partnership to make some runs. But Lungi Ngidi took out Asalanka.

Openers from Sri Lankan started the 429-run chase slow. Marco Jansen took out Pathum Nissanka swiftly. There were some brief fightbacks by Kusal Mendis (76), Charith Asalanka (79) and Dasun Shanaka (68).
