Hangzhou in China is currently hosting the 19th edition of the Asian Games, a continental multisport event that is featuring a 655-member Indian contingent this year. Originally slated for 2022, the event was postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition commenced on September 23 and will run until October 8.

At the previous edition in Jakarta in 2018, India’s 570-strong squad achieved a record-breaking performance, amassing 70 medals, including 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze. With an even larger contingent this time, India hopes to improve upon its medal count.

Off to a promising start – 2 Silvers and counting

India’s campaign at the Asian Games 2023 got off to a promising start, with the women’s 10m air rifle team, comprising Ramita, Mehuli Ghosh, and Ashi Chouksey, securing a silver medal. Additionally, Ramita and Mehuli qualified for the individual final, which ran concurrently with the team event.

Another silver medal came in the men’s lightweight double sculls, where Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind showcased their rowing prowess.

Women’s cricket team locks another Silver

The Indian women’s cricket team also made significant strides, advancing to the final at the Asian Games 2023 following their convincing eight-wicket victory against Bangladesh in the semi-final. Pooja Vastrakar emerged as the star bowler, claiming four wickets to disrupt the Bangladesh Women’s batting lineup. Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma then comfortably chased down the target with 70 balls to spare.

This achievement ensures India of at least a silver medal in women’s cricket at the Hangzhou 2023 Games. The team will await the winner of the clash between two-time Asian Games champions Pakistan and Sri Lanka Women in the final.

With these early successes, India is poised for a strong showing at the 19th Asian Games, fueled by the enthusiasm and determination of its athletes.
