Xiaomi has begun rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo on its year-old Mi 6 smartphone. The Xiaomi Mi 6 is receiving Over-the-Air (OTA) update that brings the stable version of MIUI 9.2.3 based on Android 8.0 Oreo, along with significant improvements to the device. The Mi 6 owners can head to the update settings right away to download the new update. The Xiaomi Mi 6 was launched last year with Android 7.1.1 Nougat based MIUI 9, however, it received the Android Oreo beta build a few weeks ago.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 users can go the Settings, followed by a tap on About phone, and finally the System update. After reaching the System update page, the users should automatically see the MIUI 9.2.3 update on the screen. Alternatively, the users can just simply tap on Check for updates to manually check for the update. The MIUI 9.2.3 is around 1.9GB in size and will update the device to run Android 8.0 Oreo. People who are enthusiastic about manually downloading the update can head to the MIUI forum and download the fastboot recovery ROM to flash the Mi 6. Notably, the users should keep a backup of the data before continuing for the manual update methods as all the data is erased in the process.

The MIUI 9.2.3 update for the Mi 6 will bring new Android 8.0 Oreo features such as Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode, Autofill, and animated icons among others. There are optimisations provided in the update such as an improved dialer, Recents menu, swipe actions, lockscreen notifications, and new themes for the smartphone. There are other improvements in the MIUI 9.2.3 such as the new App Lock that now takes the fingerprint data for the first time setup, fix for the WhatsApp unexpected crash while running in split screen, VoLTE call issues, issue with the proper functioning of SMS app in grouping OTP messages, and a redesigned homepage among others.

The early adopters of the MIUI 9.2.3, however, don’t seem to be liking the update. On the MIUI forum, many members who updated their Mi 6 smartphones to the MIUI 9.2.3 said that several issues and bugs began emerging after the update. The issues include vibration malfunctioning, uglier notification shade, a problem with the apps that require Draw over other apps permission such as Facebook Messenger, and swipe gestures. Also, an unusual bug in the update is causing the animated selfies takes inside apps such as Instagram and Snapchat don’t seem to be working as there is no voice in them. Xiaomi is yet to address the issues that the users are facing, but until then affected users can flash their devices with a lower MIUI version, however, it will erase all the data.
