Devotees arrived in large numbers in temples in different parts of the country to offer prayers on the occasion of the ‘Hanuman Jayanti’ festival on Tuesday.
A Hindu festival, Hanuman Janmotsav celebrates the birth of the Hindu deity and one of the main characters of the Ramayana, Lord Hanuman. In each state of India, the celebration of Hanuman Jayanti varies by time and tradition.
In most states of north India, the festival is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Chaitra.
Talking about south India, in Karnataka, Hanuman Jayanti is observed on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi, (during the Vaishakha Maasa). In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it is celebrated during the month of Dhanu (called Margali in Tamil). In Odisha, Hanuman Janmotsav is observed on Pana Sankranti. This coincides with the Odia New Year.
