Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, popularly known as Sardar Patel, was the first Deputy Prime Minister of India. Being an Indian barrister and statesman, a leader of the Indian National Congress, Sardar Patel played a leading role in the country's struggle for Independence and the years after that too. He guided nation's integration into a united, independent nation. It was announced in 2014 that his birthday, 31 October, would become an annual national celebration known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day). The intent is to pay tribute to Vallabhbhai Patel, who was instrumental in keeping India united.
